Privacy
Project SNAAP is a research study at Arizona State University (ASU) funded through the ASU Institute for Social Science Research (ISSR) and approved by the ASU Institutional Review Board (IRB). Project SNAAP is committed to privacy protection for visitors of the projectsnaapasu.com website and Project SNAAP research participants. This privacy statement applies to the Project SNAAP website, advertisement sites, screening survey, and main study survey.
Collection of Information
You will not be asked to provide any personal information when visiting the Project SNAAP website or affiliated social media or online classified sites where study advertisements are placed (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, X, Craigslist). If you decide to take our online screening survey, you will be asked to provide your and your partner’s contact information (name, email address, phone number, phone provider) so that we can contact both of you via phone and confirm your eligibility and interest. If you remain eligible and interested, we will email you a link to our main study online survey. At the end of the online survey, you will be asked to enter your contact information (name, email address) so we can send you your payment via email.
Disclosure of Information
Efforts will be made to limit the use and disclosure of your personal information, including research study records, to people who have a need to review this information. We cannot promise complete secrecy.
The results of this study may be used in future reports, presentations, or publications but your name will not be used and results will only be shared in the aggregate form. De-identified data collected as part of the current study will be kept until data analysis is completed and may be shared with other investigators for future research purposes or other uses.
All of your responses will be confidential. Your contact information is not connected to your survey responses in any way and your and your partner’s data will be linked via a unique PIN number. Your study responses will not be shared with your partner.
We have taken many steps to ensure the safety and confidentiality of your records:
After you have completed the entire study or withdrawn, your identity will be unlinked from your data, and your name will only appear on a list used to ensure that participants do not mistakenly participate again later. The list of names will be kept in a password protected computer file accessible only to research staff, and will not be available to anyone outside of this office. This information will be destroyed upon study completion.
There are some limits to this protection. We will voluntarily provide the information to:
Government or university staff sometimes review studies such as this one to make sure they are being done safely and legally. If a review of this study takes place, your records may be examined. The reviewers will protect your privacy. The study records will not be used to put you at legal risk of harm.
Your responses for this study will be protected using a secure server supporting 128-bit encryption, which provides the highest available level of protection for your confidentiality. We highly recommend that you complete the online survey alone and in the privacy of your home. It is also important to save and exit your browser (and clear your browser cache) if you decide to pause and leave your computer to continue the survey at a later time.
Voluntary Participation
Your participation in Project SNAAP, including its screening survey and main study survey, is voluntary. If you choose not to participate or to withdraw from the study at any time, there will be no penalty. When you complete the survey, you will be sent an Amazon gift card for $30.

We have taken many steps to ensure the safety and confidentiality of your records:
- All data will be identified only by a PIN number and identifiable information will be stored separately from your survey responses and will be linked only by the PIN number. The master list of identifiable information and PIN numbers will be password-protected and will only be available to senior research staff on this project. This information will be destroyed upon study completion.
- All members of the research team have received or will receive training that emphasizes the importance of confidentiality of information, and all personnel on the project (including research assistants and study staff) will complete the required training in protection of human research participants.
- Data transfer will be protected using a Secure Socket Layer. This is the same level of encryption used for most banking transactions and offers the highest degree of protection available for data transfer. Electronic protection is provided by a commercial-grade firewall, with continuous monitoring of the server for any attempts at electronic invasion.
After you have completed the entire study or withdrawn, your identity will be unlinked from your data, and your name will only appear on a list used to ensure that participants do not mistakenly participate again later. There are some limits to this protection. We will voluntarily provide the information to:
- a member of the federal government who needs it in order to audit or evaluate the research;
- individuals at Arizona State University, the funding agency, and other groups involved in the research, if they need the information to make sure the research is being done correctly;
- Arizona State authorities, if we learn of child abuse, elder abuse, or the intent to harm yourself or others.
